MOI BEIJING

Moi is the only Finnish restaurant in Beijing, and run by a Chinese-Finnish couple. For both parties this felt like a natural collaboration.

The restaurant was first opened 6 years ago, and was in need of a fresh up. Talking with the client we quickly came to the conclusion, that  for continuity the new design should incorporate parts of the original concept.

The birch trees were kept as a more literal aspect of the original theme of a birch forest, which is so typical for the finnish landscape. Other parts received a more abstracted and contemporary treatment. The ceiling takes its colour scheme from the autumn foliage of birchtrees, while the walls are kept in an understated black-and-white palette. 

Surfaces, that customers are in direct contact with are made of finnish birch plywood or solid birch wood, referencing finnish furniture of the mid 20th century, the era still most associated with finnish design.
